Gwendolyn Buttemer is the 2nd Oboe/English Horn of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. Before winning the job in Thunder Bay, she served as Principal Oboe of the Stratford Symphony Orchestra and was a regular extra with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. She was also a member of the Toronto-based Blythwood Winds and a founding member of the Kitchener-based Spiritus Ensemble.
Gwen holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, where she was a student of James Mason, and a Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory, where she was a student of Mark McEwen. During her time in Boston she was principal oboe of the Boston Civic Symphony and played with many other groups in the area, including the Boston New Music Initiative, Atlantic Wind Symphony, Dorchester Symphony, and PALS Children’s Chorus (for the American premier of the opera Moby Dick).
